Burr grinders offer a number of advantages over traditional blade-type grinders. The beans are crushed instead of chopped with a blade using two interlocking and adjustable plates (or burrs). This ensures a consistent grind each time - instead of the uneven and difficult to reproduce bits that blade grinders produce. In addition, you can easily set the number of cups you want to grind for, press the start button and walk away - the grinder will stop when finished grinding. Blade grinders typically require you to hold a button and wait while it grinds.

The new Krups GVX series grinders are an excellent cost effective and durable alternative to the more costly coffee grinders out there on the market. We've tested them out and were surprised with the sturdiness of the units, as well as the consistency of the grind. The one semi-flaw that I could find was that the coarse grind isn't all that coarse - which might put off some French Press afficionados - but in my opinion, it will work just fine even with a press. I've read reviews that say that it's extremely noisy, but I haven't found it to be any louder than any other grinders I've used. It does seem to get louder the finer you grind your coffee, but only marginally so. One interesting note is that this grinder will take your coffee as fine as you want it to go. The finest grind is near Turkish-style fine...it's incredible! I imagine that this would work just fine for espresso, as well.
